What exactly would happen during a humane re-education program?

Like, how would it differ from a regular education program? And what would be done about those who don’t want to learn?

Last emperor of china. They imprisoned him and marched his victims past his cell until he understood the impact of his actions. Then they educated him and he became a humble civil servant.
