Canadian here! They are just a throwback to when bottles of maple syrup were larger and made of earthenware pottery. It’s really just nostalgic. Plus if you heat your maple syrup in the bottle, you can use a kebab stick or whatever to haul it out of the hot water by the handle.

I don’t know if I’d want to carry maple syrup on a hike. A bear could smell it and assume I was a delicious bear-sized dessert hot pocket.
Not exciting but interesting, never thought about using a hook or stick or even heating it in hot water to begin with.
