So is Brandon’s student loan forgiveness thing actually going to get stricken down by the courts like the chuds are saying? I just need to know that this is a done deal before I use my savings to pay off the last couple thousand I’ll still owe.

I’ll admit I’m not educated on this, but don’t most Yakuza and other organized crime syndicates tend to be made up of Zainichi and Burakumin and other marginalized social groups?

Japanese-American here. NHK is currently reporting the shooter was a Japanese national.

Is it appropriate that I’m feeling the smallest, tiniest sliver of hope in my parents’ birth country right now? I don’t know what all this will lead to, but this is probably the biggest political event in Japan since the fucking atom bombs, holy shit.

As a Japanese-American who has long given up hope on Japanese politics, I’m fucking desperately hoping otherwise right now.

Yeah, I kind of doubt the authenticity of the original post, but I’m more talking about the reaction to it and the viral attention that it got. I just can’t imagine why so many people would become so emerged in the dark past of a country as irrelevant as Sweden, and the fact this is spawning from a silly post about not being offered food is too much of a stretch even for Twitter I would think. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I figured most Europeans already know about Sweden’s past imperialism towards the Sami or the fact they were basically an Axis power in all but name.

Am I a lib for thinking that there might actually be Russian influence behind the “Swedengate” bullshit?

An uninteresting Reddit post about one guy being denied food at one Swedish kid’s house leads to an all-out anti-Swedish explosion on Twitter, diving into Sweden’s imperialist and racist past? This feels too manufactured to be real and this coinciding with their NATO application seems like too much of a coincidence.

in the translation to this situation it would be good to find a way to communicate “you’re being hysterical” without the initial concession

Oh for sure, in this particular case the initial concession isn’t necessary. I would just say something like “imagine what this site would look like if every post about something that happened in the U.S. was filled with irrelevant comments complaining about issues in American politics. That’s what you’re doing now.”

Some people in that thread actually did say something similar to that and they were surprisingly upvoted, so I think it actually is a good strategy for getting R*dditors to think and process the word “China” without immediately going berserk with their usual bullshit.
