It varies site to site and gc to gc. Ive seen some sites where you cant even walk around without gloves on without them hassling you, and ive seen some where you can walk around on exposed trusses with no harness and no one cares.

Saw a dude fall 50 feet once down to pavement because he was walking around with no harness, come to find out later he’s some 14 year old kid here illegally from some Central American country. Incredibly rage inducing watching that take place and then absolutely no consequences to the gc or employer.

Typically, if you’re close to a big city like Seattle or Dallas, standards are high, but the further out you get into the burbs, the worse the standards get. This is all about commercial construction, btw, residential is literally the wild west in regards to safety lmao

Look up trade positions on indeed or some other job search site. “Plumbers helper” “electrical helper” etc. Companies will take literally anyone with a pulse , no experience needed. Be aware, however, that the trades are rough physically and mentally, and are populated by incredibly reactionary folks. Homophobia, racism, transphobia, etc. Are incredibly common still today.

Edit: Yeah, see the comment above for unions, I would recommend starting out in one, safety is a much higher priority (typically) in unions.
