The modern schooling system in the US and much of Europe has evolved directly out of educational institutions pioneered in the 19th century with the intent of turning the working class into better soldiers and subjecting them to nationalist indoctrination.
The rigidly enforced structure and hierarchical relations inside of it are obviously authoritarian.
I suppose belief that the movements of distant stellar objects can directly affect elements of your life that can somehow be predicted using centuries old pseudoscience is about as rational as the belief that a functional anarchist society can exist for more than a few weeks. Considering that it makes complete sense!
(This is joke I swear, I have many anarchist friends and am not being sectarian I promise)
The trouble is that people look at a state and culture that lasted 2100 years in some form or other, and yet apply the same expectations to every part of their history.
Rome winning the Punic wars with an excess of manpower, and winning 10-1 engagements against vast gallic and Germanic armies were further away from each other than we are from the Napoleonic wars today.
