I think the sheer magnitude of misinformation and propaganda in the western world (and especially the US) surrounding China and the USSR causes many westerners to overcompensate in our defense of said nations, which results some pretty terrible takes.

I grew up in the Southern Baptist church, which was literally founded and established in defense of slavery.

The supposed threat of sexual violence by black men against white women was one of the main weapons the Democratic Party used to persuade poor white southerners to vote against their own economic interests throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I’d say not much has changed.
