Thank you for those explanations. There is certainly a lot to unpack in that book. If you know what episodes of Historic.ly and War Nerd those are I would definitely listen. Do you know if we are doing another book sometime?
This book was like a David Lynch movie for me, where I enjoyed the startling moments even though they felt disjointed. I still don’t understand:
What was up with the letter writer’s story of the rising trash in the stairwell? What did that mean?
What were the voices on the tape up to? The whole “I can see blah blah” " I can only see some columns"
How did the church figure in? They’re complicit I guess? They’re covering their involvement?
If the library was a sinister plot, who did it serve?
Everyone on the plane knows they are headed for destruction?
I guess I hoped to have a clearer read of this as political allegory but it’s not clear to me.
I’m gonna check out that AMA, maybe some of these thing will be illuminated. Looking forward to our next read here.
This fucking rocks. Thank you o7
I’ve decided to learn to read music. Got an app for Android called Complete Music Reading Trainer by BinaryGuilt Software ( just throwing that out there to make it easier to find) that has been great for study. I paid a few bucks for the full version but there’s enough to get you started for free and I’m sure there’s similar apps that are all free.
Note recognition will come to you faster than you think. It’s great to be able to practice whenever you have a sec.
I keep thinking of Franz Liszt lately because I am trying to learn to sight read and I read he was supposed to have been the greatest sight reader to ever live and could play complex pieces at full speed his first time looking at them. AND he looks like this! Must have been nice.
Got it thanks. When I referred to the “rise of fascism” think I confused myself because I’m also reading a book called Mephisto by Klaus Mann that is set in and was written during mid 30s in Germany and I thought a similar thing was going on. I’ll have to read about the Years of Lead. I’ve never heard of it.
I think this will be cool when it starts to make a little more sense. Like, I’m not sure what this monster is that’s batting people against trees or why the statues switched places. So either I’m a bad reader or it’s still pretty mysterious. I’d be curious what background events in Italy the author might have seen around him. Idk much about what Italian society was like before and during the rise of fascism. Like if there are historical incidents being alluded to I wouldn’t know. The nice boys who start the library are a funny touch.
Could use more contrast. Darker darks. Also crosshatching can be a pretty flexible technique. Wrapping the lines across the form can be a good practice. Durer drawings are a good example of it. Hope that helped or wasn’t too annoying
