Each municipality is given a high degree of financial autonomy.
Financed by local taxes, the richest communes are naturally better off.
This seems like a massive part of the problem right here. It reminds me of the recent chapo interview about Bolivia, where the guest says for the most part developing countries have no tax base. They have cash economies and nobody pays tax, therefore there is no governmental budget for anything. Seems like Chile probably is like that on a national scale, but has a local tax system to fund local benefits.
We have similar problems in the US, where breakaway cities will have good school districts and roads because they’re funded by property taxes. If the conservatives had their way, we would be like Chile. We would have small, dense rich neighborhoods or even private gated communities like the Villages, and vast stretches of poor counties and states. Actually, that sounds like how it is now.
Anecdotal story. I visited Palestine and had dinner with a family that included adult sisters, probably in their 60s. Both Palestinians, but they spoke to each other in Spanish. That’s their first language, because their parents fled in 48 to Columbia. They moved back after growing up at some point. I was pretty confused too, when I heard not Arabic or English, but Spanish.
The US and UK politics mirror each other. So if the left really splits off and makes its own party, the odds are good we try it here too, within a couple years of them doing it.
Seriously. There was a major antitrust breakup a half century ago where the movie companies famously were forbidden from owning the production, marketing and distribution of their products. So they all sold off the theaters and let those be independent.
So how the fuck does Disney have its own TV channel and disney+, which has exclusive distribution of most of their content. Same question for Netflix.
Wow, I had never heard of this city. Just read on the link. That’s a trip. Especially the stuff about how packed everyone way, walking on roofs between buildings. Burials under the floors.
Reminder that trump bought a full page new York times ad calling for the death penalty for five black kids for a crime they don’t commit.
I still use it when I’m on mobile, and when I have computer time to be doing this, I come here. Also, one nice thing about the discord is the format of steady conversations on each topic. I don’t have to find a link/meme thats interesting, then have a conversation about that. That was one thing I actually grew to really like about the discord. Megathreads are the closest thing to them, I suppose. Maybe each channel here needs full-time megathreads?
Why is he paying for negative ads against himself?
For one, it’s hyper normalization. Just like in Adam Curtis’ film, as the soviet union was collapsing economically, everybody knew it. But, nobody knew what to do about it. So if the leader said “go about business as usual”, then that’s what a lot of people did. We have no alternative that makes sense to enough people for it to become a thing.
And second, airports should stop the TSA checkpoints now. What’s the point? To stop another 9/11? That’s just three days worth of covid deaths. Put that department to better use. How about taking people’s temperatures when they enter the airport instead. Airplanes are being flown with no empty seats. The numbers are so high because people are catching it everywhere. They’re getting it on planes, in schools, in restaurants, at work. Our organized efforts to stop this are pathetic to non-existent.
