A sneaker is more or less a basketball shoe and adjacent styles of athletic footwear.
Sneaker collecting started to become a thing in the 70s in the Hip Hop scene in NYC. Sneakers gave people the ability to easily customize their shoes to match a personal style, painting them, dying them etc. In the 80s you got the Nike’s Air Jordans, which blew up the scene. You’d have a lot of shoe companies working with different celebs to drive the popularity of the Sneaker. It rapidly takes on the properties of a status symbol.
Now you have Sneakerheads, which is basically a consumer identity that is willing to spend a lot of time and money to ensure that they have a large collection of sneakers that many don’t even wear. As with many things, I think there is something cool in there that was ruined by hyper consumptive capitalism.

Pretty basic breakfast but, Tofu and soy chorizo scramble, spice as desired (I do garlic salt, turmeric and a mushroom powder msg replacement). Top that baby up with some fresh cilantro and/or hot sauce. If you want to get fancy, saute some peppers, onions and mushroom before you throw the tofu in. I eat this for breakfast basically everyday.

So, the word bad likely comes from a queerphobic insult. should we also remove that from our lexicon despite the vast, vast majority of people not knowing or caring about this history? I do think that our social conception of intelligence should change, but I don’t know if policing the absolute edges of negative language that is grounded in bigotry is the way to do that.
It’s been a while seen I watched the show, but the guru is the most egregious example iirc. It also leans heavily into “oriental mysticism” which in and of itself is gonna be difficult starting point, especially without robust connection to the cultures/religions/mythologies. In AATL, there is a bit of colonial apologia in the fact that aang is unwilling to kill the fascist strongman. I know its a kid’s show but look at the monk gyatzo scene. If you are telling a story, even to kids, about the horrors of imperialism you can’t shy away from killing the fucking hitler-analogue especially when there has been no apprehension for Aang to ostensibly kill a ton of people throughout the show. IMO korra is much much worse in this regard though. At least aatl doesn’t explicitly apologize for fascism.
