Might be a controversial take, but I’m concerned about people letting themselves shape sweeping, negative views on things that are (keyword: relatively) minor or just don’t fully know the story behind. For example, EA was voted “Worst Company in America” multiple years in a row, when it’s really just a software company whose worst sins would probably amount to gross overworking/general poor treatment of their employees. That’s bad, but I feel like it’s pretty inarguably better than chocolate companies who use child labor to harvest cocoa beans.
It’s especially concerning when it extends to global/political issues (this is why I said this might be controversial). We don’t tend to realize that we share much more in common with people in other countries than we realize, probably helped by the fact that most news sites tend to leave out details or exaggerate bad parts when talking about governments other than their own (a notorious example is the reporting on North Korea . Here’s a good vid about it (CW: very graphic) Not saying it’s a wonderful place to live, just that it’s exaggerated.) Part of the reason political conversations feel so toxic is because so many of us just don’t know a lot of what’s going on or what each other is talking about, so we’re rarely on the same page. Reading a quick Wikipedia summary and/or article can go a long way
what i do know is people that left countries during/after a revolution, for example cubans moving to florida, is because many of them were wealthy and fled to preserve their fortune/lives in some cases. as to why they do it now, i’m not too sure but i suspect a lot of it has to do with the idolization that some people in socialist countries tend to have with capitalist ones - michael parenti’s blackshirts and reds has a good write-up about the latter in chapter 7. that, and the ones who have the means to leave are also probably wealthy and want to gain more wealth

are these “tankies” in the room with us right now?
this reminds me of a few days ago where i saw a post where someone put their oc with a trans black sun and said “there’s like no trans fash art so i made my own” like wow i wonder why
Meh… I don’t think defederation is necessary. Personally, my biggest issue with Hexbear is, as with most other socialist-oriented online spaces, is that it’s hard to find discussion that isn’t focused on it, and especially international socialism since my main focus is my community (hence why I chose this instance). It’s not really my thing, I hate terms like “shitlib” and “tankie” and my big interests are outside of my worldview- that’s not to say I don’t care about it, far from it, but it’s not something I talk/think about all the time.
That being said, it can be refreshing once in a while to have an explicitly anti-capitalist instance whose discussions don’t puppet ones pushed by massive, capitalist news organizations. Not only is it another perspective but there’s sometimes totally new stuff that I end up learning.
Idk. I think the biggest reason we shouldn’t defederate as opposed to, say, lemmygrad, is because Hexbear explicitly supports left unity as far as I can tell, so I think it’s fine to keep federating.
