Great post, Neera! It’s important that we avoid centering western nations when discussing colonialism and imperialism.
Dialectics is one that I’ve never understood, actually - I’ve just never understood what the word means. Marx doesn’t use it, incidentally, it’s used by Engels. And if anybody can tell me what it is, I’ll be happy. I mean, I’ve read all kinds of things which talk about “dialectics” - I haven’t the foggiest idea what it is. It seems to mean something about complexity, or alternative positions, or change, or something. I don’t know.

I guess this is a bit of a gripe, but John Oliver is also pretty smarmy and annoying. So like once you start disagreeing with him everything he says starts being nails on a chalkboard. Kinda carries over to his target demographic and makes them frustrating. Or maybe they were already like that and the show just mirrors the petite-bougie but downwardly mobile / uncertain worldview? My bit about it IRL is that it’s a “well if I was in charge…” from people who are honestly not that far away from being in charge.
“anyone else find it bizarre…?” I think this is what you’re looking for caitlin johnstone article
