Chiming in with a trans man’s perspective: My hair started thinning considerably about two years ago after about 5 years on T, and I ended up getting a prescription for topical finasteride (plus a low dose of oral minoxidil) since I was worried about the potential side effects of taking finasteride orally. Though the doctor I spoke to about it wasn’t really worried about it “reversing” the changes from testosterone, getting a topical solution seems to prevent a lot of the hormonal side effects from happening? The main thing I was worried about was potentially getting periods again, which apparently can happen to some people.

I’ve definitely noticed improvement from the finasteride! The main downside is that I need to buy it from a compounding pharmacy, and my insurance won’t cover it.

Good point. I guess it’s concerning because it’s invasive yet doesn’t have much proof backing up its purported benefits

That was my initial thought. The specialist mentioned dry needling in the same breath as something “they used to do” instead, though, so I got a weird vibe about it. I guess the main idea is distracting the brain from the major source of pain, so 🤷

I have similar problems that I’m still trying to figure out how to manage. For me, it’s picking and biting the skin beside my fingernails, plus biting/chewing the insides of my cheeks.

When I paint my fingernails, it makes me not want to mess up the polish, so that can work for a while… but it also makes me a little dysphoric. I was thinking about trying some kind of cuticle oil or balm to apply when I get fidgety so that I can’t mess with the dry skin. Not sure what to do about my cheek biting though. :cowboy-cri:
