Reading up on all this business about trots morphing into neocons, and Laroucheites Maupinites getting stroggified or something.

But it’s easy to avoid getting sucked down one of these bizarre quasi-leftist rabbit holes! If they proudly fly the :amerikkka: then they’re up to no good. It’s uncanny how consistently that works as a litmus test.

Space stuff makes me sad. It’s just so expensive. What is all of this spending for?

Is it an escape plan so that some remnant of humanity can survive when the capitalists make Earth uninhabitable? That’s annoying. It’s unacceptable to me that we should do the whole Interstellar plot where we mortgage entire generations so that a few embryos can survive. There is no inherent worth in at least some humans somewhere surviving. It’s not going to be comforting to me in my dying smog-choked breath that there’s someone on Mars who can write haiku and remember the Native American constellation legends.

Or is space tech ultimately in pursuit of cheap resource extraction? Humanity’s problem is resource distribution, not scarcity. Human beings are missing meals and sleeping in doorways and dying of preventable diseases but we still pour $trillions out into space, so that each individual private enterprise or state can get an edge on the rest in the race. Individualism writ upon the corporate sphere. It’s no different from China building aircraft carriers. Sure military power might be table stakes to exist among the sharks in this Westphalian milieu, but the irreplaceable toiling hours of the lives of millions being shoveled into the furnace out of grim necessity is hardly something to be jazzed about. Think of how much people could be helped if we weren’t building weapons and paying Bezos to dream about mining asteroids.

I understand why you gotta build aircraft carriers and you gotta build a moon base, but it’s all depressing as hell. To me it represents not the best of humanity, but the worst. The comfortable among us ought to stay grounded and take care of people here on Earth, now, and not retreat into fantasies. In the context of the Soviet space program I’ve heard the whole argument about the value of escapism and a sense of greater purpose during hard times but… I strongly suspect that the people who are excited about allocating more resources into space are not typically the same people who are sitting heavily down at the kitchen table with tears in their eyes wondering how they’re going to make it through the month.

by clean he means not poor, by safe he means not black, and by beautiful he means not functional. and I bet for nine tenths of the middle class libs he’s talking to, “city” means miles of strip malls. make our parking lots beautiful again by removing that unsightly bus stop from outside the spiffy new olive garden. meanwhile for actual cities they want the sidewalks completely festooned with anti-homeless spikes so everyone has to drive and it’s all-day traffic jams. acres of mayos wearing bluetooth headsets in the car trying to get work done on their 8-hour commutes. all nervously side-eyeing anything model year 2007 or older that ventures in among the audis and teslas.

“today you clutch your child’s hand tightly and feel your pulse quicken when there’s a weather-beaten person up ahead resting their tired feet, tomorrow it’s bands of minorities running helter skelter. when you think about it, constructing concentration camps is the only way for decent people to protect ourselves from anyone slightly less affluent than we are. and if a security guard has to clear his throat and tap the ‘30 minutes or less’ sign when I’m finishing my coffee, that’s a small price to pay to enjoy all that sterile beige stucco and hostile architecture without my paranoid nightmares of antifer death squads flaring up.”
