Look up Henry Steel Olcott. He’s the western “rational buddhist” godfather, way before Sam Harris. A lot of it is basically puritanical western beliefs with buddhist clothes and without the Jesus. He probably brought some of that denial of self and life from his protestant upbringing, but I’m too uninformed to make further comments.
