Do you all know of any good reads or videos about the struggles of African-Americans post-civil war and specifically how those struggles were tied (and still are) to capitalism? I was watching “The Help” last night… it’s not terrible but it’s a major Hollywood movie so of course it’s lib af. They show black maids getting treated poorly by well-offish white women, but the movie never really ties it all to capitalism. It piqued my interest in the subject, though.
Not what you asked for but, pre-civil war many were taken to Texas which was/is Mexico’s which had already abolished slavery and banned the entry of slaves into the territory, Austin saw slavery as essential to their project and thats why he rebelled and why the US supported their ‘revolution’, which was essentially slaver-capitalist reaction from an Anglo/White settler state against a Mestizo/Third World Republic which had already had a black president (Vicente Guerrero) Also anyone that had been enslaved became free when they crossed the border so many did come from the moment Texas was annexed from the US until slavery was abolished.
