Have ML/communist leaders historically been aware that they have supporters in the US/europe?

Did Mao know that he had comrades outside of china? Does Xi know that he has supporters in the US/europe? I’m wondering if it ever comes up when discussing policy. Does anyone know? I guess what I’m trying to say is :xi-plz: save us.
