Can it break through though? Or did it just catch countries off guard once they had relaxed their precautions?
I can’t speak for other countries but Australia had seen off several waves via staged lockdowns, city and state border closures, and rapid contact tracing. Delta is just a bit too fast-spreading for this to work. That said our state authorities should have gone to full lockdown a week earlier.
How bad is the lockdown fatigue down under? I would at least think there would be some sense of reinvigoration from previous success, as opposed to the grinding futility that has been the American experience of trying to stop the spread.
There’s some, enough that people aren’t taking it as seriously as they should. That said most places aren’t openly flouting lockdown laws or refusing to wear masks, and an anti-mask protest last week got shut down hard via police cavalry with broad public approval and dozens of arrests. First time I’ve seen Sydneysiders outside the Northwest conservative bastions actually be on the cops’ side at a protest.
