also what is the lathe people keep mentioning. I know what the actual tool is but is this a podcast reference or something?

It’s a reference to the book The Lathe of Heaven, by Ursula le Guin, in which the main character has a dream about a fictional event that happened in the past, then woke up and finds out that history has changed and that event actually happened.
