The annual cost of owning an automobile ranges from $5,200 to $10,500. There are 82 vehicles per 100 people in the United States. In addition, construction and maintenance of all roadways costs around $200 billion per year, or about $600 for each individual. The GDP per capita of the United States is $56,200. Therefore, the cost of mere automobile ownership and usage amounts to at least one eighth, or 12.5%, of our entire economic product.

The median personal income is closer to $41k, and pickup trucks cost closer to $10k to own and operate, so a pickup owner in a rural area (i.e. not an exurban leech) is probably going to spend a third of their income on their vehicle.
