It’s interesting how Canada and Canadians have this reputation in the US as being leftist and open-minded people who love everyone. I’ve found Canadians to be pretty conservative, “liberal” by US standards, and not really as open-minded with race issues as they like to think.
Their entire identity is consumed by “not being American”. Whatever America is, they’ll get on the other side. What makes it worse is that Americans are only dimly aware they exist. Here’s an interesting video that does a good run-down on the topic.
The title kind of falls into the idea of Canadians being “leftist” simply because of anti-americanism.
Canada seems to just have different racial anxieties than Americans, and so because Americans think everyone is like them, Canada appears enlightened. Canadians also consume a shitload of American media (duh), and generally align with the liberals specifically on the subject of Black people / African Americans. Ask them about Asians though, and a lot of Canadians become phrenologists, who will point to the asiatic skull being incapable of empathy. Also most canadians seem to think that native peoples all vanished into thin air upon contact with europeans, and that their mistreatment was a brief period in the 15th century, and not a litteral centuries long holocaust.
