She has never actually tweeted. Instead tweets are written by a grandchild as a continual collection of bits. Oates is 83. After she’s dies - a book will come out called “Joyce Carol Oates’ Best Bits” where the ruse will be revealed. The literary world will be aghast as will all premier media outlets in the US and many international outlets
There will be much controversy. Meanwhile Little Oates will make bank and the publisher will have banner sales. The writer legally changed their name to that just before they signed their contract with the publisher.
Another recent banger…
for Michael Mann, as for Martin Scorsese, the thrill of such films is a vicarious engagement with blind, seemingly directionless & chaotic “destiny”–the participants can’t know their fate, the filmmakers do.
The they/them take is dogshit though. English pronouns are already confusing, we’ve passed a line of implicit meaning. People use singular they all the time when talking about a person they don’t know, a person they’re unsure of gender-wise, hypothetical individuals, or just when ‘he/she’ usage starts to get cacophonous and they wanna mix it up.
I’ve lost count of the amount of times even the weird nerds who make it an issue accidentally slip one in.
Also, “language seeks to communicate w/ clarity, not to obfuscate; that is its purpose”? Then why the fuck does English still exist? It’s a colonial remnant that has enough exceptions to be a game of fucking Calvinball.
Also, they/them all. Literally, the same thing as the second-person ‘you all’. Which also doesn’t have a single-word plurality distinguisher.
In some cases it might be awkward, but if it’s a sticking point, use they. Literally no one cares. People can ask for clarification. We have so many double meanings already, what’s one more to accomodate a marginalized group.
