it’s not really a joke, it’s more of a signifier that you’re part of the in group and that you’re not taking the conversation seriously.
it doesn’t really make anyone laugh and I don’t think it’s actually intended to make anyone laugh. I used to get mad about this when reaction images and macros / rage comics were new and popular but I realized at some point that they’re just a low effort way of communicating using a shared language. actual writing is hard so people lean on these other tools. as long as we don’t confuse them for writing or creativity, there’s no problem – not everything needs to be unique or high effort.
