fun fact: the land that United Fruit and the CIA overthrew Jacobo Arbenz for was 200,000 acres of unused land. United Fruit literally owned empty land that wasn’t even being used, and Jacobo Arbenz did very tepid and liberal land reforms that redistributed only the 200,000 unused acres of land and in exchange United Fruit would actually get something in return. Arbenz was going to forgive United Fruit of all the taxes they failed to pay to the Guatemalan government in exchange for taking their unused land. People think the CIA is just acting for American imperialism, but it is also acting for the profit of its own members. CIA director Allen Dulles held stock in United Fruit when Arbenz was overthrown. Che Guevara was in Guatemala in 1954 when the Arbenz government was overthrown and it radicalized him deeply.
