Aside from the obvious fact that an abortion ban would allow the Democrats to do nothing and say “vote blue to get abortion rights back” forever as well as the fact that most Democratic voters are upper-middle class white collar workers who wouldn’t really be affected by the ban. My theory is that the elites are realizing that America is demographically screwed. For years, Americans bragged about how China is never going to be a superpower because of its low fertility rate. But with a collapse in immigration rates under Trump and COVID as well as Zoomers/Millennials not having kids because they cannot afford it, it’s looking like America is entering its own demographic crisis. Even Muskrat was talking about this. When you have no one to buy your junk, then the American economy grinds to a halt. My theory is that failsons like Musk will start a massive push to end abortion in order to increase the birth rate so the capitalist system in the west survives just a little longer. and that Democrats will play right along.
I assume the dem machine wants the GOP justices to just out-and-out kill Roe and ban abortion nationwide. Dem voters will be irrationally angry and fearful. They’ll believe all the dem’s bullshit and lies about making abortion legal again once they are in power.
Of course - the dems will pretend their stance doesn’t put our democracy in even great danger. For example if the GOP captures enough state legislatures, they can call a Constitutional Convention to change the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.
The dems will ignore that. All they are focused on is that for a very long time (A decade? Decades?) - they can easily fund raise off abortion, their base will be super-energized, and campaigning will be simple. A ham sandwich could run for office if they proudly proclaim they are pro-choice even if that too is probably a lie.
Agreed. Dems could have passed legislation many times now making abortion protections the law of the land, instead of just relying on Roe, and they haven’t. They also could have prevented Republicans from forcing two justices onto the court, knowing that would lead to Roe being overturned, among many other consequences.
If they wanted to defend abortion, they would have done so.
And - although this purely theoretical - Biden and the dems could have packed the court last year. Plus - it’s possible Biden is more religious than he seems and all this time he might have been strongly anti-abortion but he kept it quiet for political reasons. In 1973 he was sworn in as a senator just a few weeks before Roe was decided.
