Gravel didn’t just leak the Pentagon Papers; he personally read them into the congressional record (IIRC it took a long fucking time) to make sure they’d get out to the public even if a newspaper wouldn’t publish them.
It’s funny because he ran his Senate campaign against an incumbent who was against the Vietnam war, but left his position ambiguous in order to win, when in reality he was far more against the war than the other guy.

It blows my mind that people are still upset when politicians don’t just openly say exactly what they truly believe. Sure, you don’t want someone who’s just taking you for a ride, but it’s totally acceptable for someone to compromise publicly to serve some long-term goal. You’re not going to get very far if you can’t do that.
