Teach kids Marxism tbh. When you look at things systematically and in terms of classes and forces as opposed to individualist Great Man Theory, then you become much less prone to adventurism. Even as edgy leftists, a lot of the people we meme about for going full Jokerfied weren’t actually leftists, such as :dorner: and :a-guy:. Even :jb-shining: was motivated by religion and a conviction that, since his cause was just, God would carry him to victory - and obviously his cause was just and what he was trying to do was good, but he’s not above critique. Many of the socialist leaders we look up to did violence, but it was collective violence with the intent of establishing a new order and a reasonable chance of success, which is a fundamentally different thing. It’s pretty common for mass shooters to think that they can change the world and inspire some shift in consciousness by some big dramatic blaze of glory, because that’s what our media shows and it’s also often how history is taught. Also, Americans have no understanding of what place violence is supposed to hold or when it should or shouldn’t be used. If you tell people, “Violence is always bad,” then of course they’re going to see contradictions there, and we basically just leave kids to figure out how to make sense of these contradictions on their own, but then, most adults don’t have coherent views on violence either, and don’t understand the difference between collective violence and individual violence. The state has worked tirelessly to eliminate leftist orgs, both through violence and infiltration, and through propaganda, and the result of that is that pressure cannot be directed in a rational way to effect change, but instead builds up until it starts bursting the seams.
Shit… I read that “Essential Works of Lenin” from the Hexbear theory archive a few months ago. I can’t remember exactly what he called it, when people would argue that a random act of violence would shock people to revolution for the actors cause… but he definitely was shitting all over the idea.
That may have been the group he was critiquing. But I thought he used a term or phrase that meant something like, “The idea that an adventurism would wake up the sleeping proletariat.”
My first guess (I’m really going to have to stop being lazy and dig through the text myself) was something like “revolutionary violence” but I don’t have confidence that its the term he was using.
