People should stop the “he is usualy pretty good so lets gonna ignore his fed posting and continue on and also promote and push his domestic issue vids to left leaning people or as radicalization” .
The people like Oliver or some socdem talking heads are all the more dangerous because they gain from western (baby) leftists a huge benifit of the doupt by doing good content for pretty uncontroversial among anyone left of socdem domestic issues and so their anti-communist and shitty foreign policy positions get accepted and digested by that left-lib audience all the more easily. People get to trust them and consider them legit info and not like other msm so their mental and critical defenses are way down when consuming their content. And as such they are the perfect and most efficient “agents” in spreading and reinforcing the western left’s shinophobia and toothless foreign policy positions and outlook of the world (and subsequent inability and incoherency on mastering any united position against those things). Consiously promoting such figures as parts of a left radicalization only makes the imperialist tendencies and shitty analysis of the emerging baby left all the more entranced and difficult to shake
“Progressive” “allies” like Oliver are much more difficult to organize against wrt lib brains than blue dog types or Republicans. They promote and entrench the false consciousness of social democracy (that they’ll never fight for anyways) where we could otherwise agitate, defanging our actions and movements. It’s propaganda like Oliver’s show that mean BLM and Defund get appropriated and shut down. Rinse and repeat for every social movement we create, help with, piggyback on.
This kind of lib :brainworms: is basically 2/3 of :reddit-logo:. At best, you can point someone to it while explaining what’s wrong with it. But it will not radicalize, it will only set someone up for radicalization when they realize that it’s false through other means, including lived experience and stumbling across socialists and socialist theory.
I guess this is a bit of a gripe, but John Oliver is also pretty smarmy and annoying. So like once you start disagreeing with him everything he says starts being nails on a chalkboard. Kinda carries over to his target demographic and makes them frustrating. Or maybe they were already like that and the show just mirrors the petite-bougie but downwardly mobile / uncertain worldview? My bit about it IRL is that it’s a “well if I was in charge…” from people who are honestly not that far away from being in charge.
