Denise Oliver-Velez, born on this day in 1947, is a former member of both the Young Lords and Black Panthers, as well as an American professor, activist, and community organizer. Oliver-Velez is an adjunct Professor of Anthropology and Women’s Studies at State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz.
Oliver-Velez was a member of both the Young Lords and the Black Panther Party (BPP), and fought to make the Young Lords a less chauvinistic and more feminist organization. In 1970 Oliver-Velez was appointed as Minister of Economic Development, becoming the highest ranking woman in the Young Lords.
In addition to her activism with the Young Lords, Oliver-Velez was also an AIDS movement activist, publishing ethnographic research as part of HIV/AIDS intervention projects. She has also worked in public broadcasting and community media for many years, becoming a program director and co-founder of WPFW-FM in Washington, D.C., Pacifica Radio’s first minority-controlled station.

Pretty sure I watched someone’s brain break in real time this weekend, one of my SO’s family members mentioned how they don’t recycle at home and I got them talking in circles (I understand that recycling is way down the list of important things to save the environment).
The argument was that they didn’t recycle because it costs more money for the trucks to drive to the recycling plant than it saves to recycle :what-the-hell:
I explained that they were still paying city taxes for the trucks to drive to the recycling center whether they participated or not, so they might as well separate their glass and metal because it’s better than the environment. They then argued that it’s pointless to do if it doesn’t save money, to which I responded that recycling isn’t about saving money, it’s about not filling landfills with things that will effectively never break down.
The final reply was that most people think that recycling saves money which is misleading, and my final response was that no, actually most people do not think that lol. Nothing left to talk about at that point so I just walked away. I hope I sowed a seed of doubt since this person is very easily influenced by chud acquaintances and that’s probably how they got that opinion in the first place, but I’m not holding my breath.
I always wonder how these people managed to form these ideas in their brain.
Well this particular person tends to just believe the first thing they hear, especially when it comes from their SO, who is a chud. The SO is likely not recycling on purpose to own the libs and then made up this excuse to justify why they weren’t recycling when asked about it.
We also discovered that they carry a near-max balance on their credit cards at all times, despite having wayyyy more than enough money in the bank to pay off their statement in full. Didn’t get an explanation on that one, but I’d love to hear it.
