Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins
Defense Politics Asia’s youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)
Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Last week’s discussion post.
I think Russia is going to prolong this war into the winter to force the West to sign a peace deal with them. It really sucks for the ukrainian population, and most of the europeans who will suffer because the West pushed for a war that they couldn’t win.
You win a war when you achieve the political goals for entering it. In Russia’s case this means:
- Liberation of the Donbass, either by incorporating the areas into Russia proper or by having them function as independent nations.
- Denazification and demilitarisation of the Ukraine, ie. removing the threat to Russian security posed by having a heavily armed neighbour, controlled by a hostile empire.
Material factors means that the first is most likely going to happen eventually. The second one is a lot harder as it requires a peace with an Ukrainian government that includes neutrality and gets the US/NATO out of the Ukraine. To get there Russia needs to deplete NATO’s will and ability to continue the proxy war. Currently this is happening through the economic war that is likely to devastate Europe. Maybe a European economic crash and the political turmoil it creates will deplete Europe’s ability to support the Kiev government, forcing them to die for peace.
I meant winning for the West, since you said they could never win. I think the West considers destroying a bunch of russian equipment and dragging them into a war for who knows how long to be at least somewhat of a win as long as ukraine still exists as a country by the end.
While I partly agree with your pity at the same time the civilians of Ukraine are to blame for letting Nazi ideology flourish.
Ukrainian civilians are just like any other population and blaming them doesn’t really get to the root of the issue.
The west has been engaged in decades of propaganda in the Ukraine and funded the growth of virulent anti-Russian nationalism as a tool for taking over the Ukraine. Blame the US government, blame the British government, blame the CIA. Blame the Ukrainian bourgeoisie for supporting fascism as well.
I have empathy and pity for them because I hate being cold but it was their choices and apathy that made their bed.
The politics are a symptom of a culture that accepts and promotes racially motivated hate. If you want a “normal life” you don’t vote for people who use violence and hate to get their way. After the coup in July 2014 Ukrainians had the chance to say that they didn’t support nazis and violence and instead they voted in favor of the guy who claimed to be the main funding behind nazi’s coup. They voted for violence and hate.
Then in 2019 they voted for a clown who obviously was owned by Ihor Kolomoyskyi who had offered bounties for separatists and who funded nazi militias. Maybe a bunch of zeleneskyy’s base were fooled because he was talking about negotiating an end to the civil war but what percentage of them voted for him because of who owned him? What percentage of people who voted against him did so because they knew he was a puppet? What percentage voted against him because they thought he would actually stop killing Russian speakers?
5 years and the second election after a full on Nazi coup is not a time for “average people [who] just want to live a normal life” to be casual with their politics. At best there was 15% of people who voted against groups who fund Nazis and 50% who were lazy enough to fall for lies in a nation where literal nazis controlled their government.
They were apathetic to a social disease growing in their nation and taking over their governement. In nature apathy is a fatal mistake they are getting off lightly by just having a cold winter.
