Project M is a fan-made modification of the video game Super Smash Bros Brawl. Designed in response to fan complaints about Brawl’s physics engine, it attempted to redesign the game to play more like Brawl’s predecessor, Super Smash Bros Melee (widely considered at the time to be the best Super Smash Bros game). The mod features every character included in Brawl, with the addition of Mewtwo and Roy in Project M, and Knuckles the Echidna in Project M’s successor mod, Project Plus. In addition, the mod redesigned and streamlined every character’s moveset with the goal of making the roster as balanced as possible. Currently, every character in the game is considered capable of taking a top 8 spot at a major tournament.

Development started in 2010 with the goal of modding Brawl Falco to play more like the character did in Melee, and quickly evolved from there. By 2015 the mod had been downloaded over three million times, with a flourishing tournament scene of over 500,000 members. This growth was aided in part by the ease with which one could boot up Project M on an unmodded Wii, by utilizing an exploit with the stage builder in Brawl to easily load mods without having to homebrew one’s console. In addition to the main mod a number of submods have been released over the years, including PMEX Remix which expands the game’s roster of playable characters to a whopping 116.

In December of 2015, the mod suddenly ceased development, replacing all download links on the website with a statement addressed to the community. No one knows exactly why it happened so suddenly, although former devs have commented that the team received no legal threat from Nintendo but that the mod was taken down in order to protect against a potential future legal threat. Regardless, a number of troubles have faced the community since then, including the removal of all tournament sets from VGBootcamp (a large youtube channel dedicated to archiving tournament sets for future viewing), and most major tournaments dropping PM from their main roster of games.

Regardless of this, development has restarted from the community in the form of an unaffiliated fan continuation Project +, and large tournaments continue to be hosted both nationally and locally to this very day (although many would argue the community is a shadow of its former self). If you’d like to check the mod out for yourself, the mod’s community discord has downloads and resources to get started emulating the mod on your computer, with netplay giving the ability to play with friends from hundreds of miles away. Project M lives, as long as we let it.

Libs try not to think about why global poverty exists. They absorb the hegemonic attitude that it is a natural phenomenon we just haven’t fixed yet.

Not to mention child labor.

While the U.S. government has acknowledged the risks of tobacco farming, it’s still legal for kids at age 12 to work on a tobacco farm of any size with parental permission, and there’s no minimum age for children to work on small tobacco farms or those owned by family.

“I [still] get headaches and … my stomach hurts,” 16-year-old Elena G., who has worked in tobacco fields since she was 12, told Human Rights Watch. “And like I feel nauseous. … I just feel like my stomach is like rumbling around. I feel like I’m gonna throw up.”
