The US opposed Nord Stream 2 from the beginning and massively disliked the strong economic ties between Germany and Russia, or the idea that cooperation between Russia and the EU could increase. The US sentiment was not shared by Germany, and a lot of Germans would still prefer to buy the much cheaper Russian gas, but the sabotage showed what would happen in that case: If we used the remaining line, Amerika would simply blow that up as well.
to be clear: ofc the German government is fully behind all this imperialist nonsense now (the SPD probably with a bit more reluctance than the Greens and the FDP). I’m just saying they would act differently without US pressure, as it would absolutely be in this country’s own material interest. in fact, the higher price of non-Russian gas and the fact we have to buy it with $ instead of € is a severe threat to Germany’s economy. but it’s a threat we are forced to accept, and dissent is buried under the worst propaganda campaign i’ve seen in my entire life.
It’s the MacKinder Thesis. US must never allow Germany and Russia (Europe and Asia) to work together. Such an entity would be strong enough to throw off American hegemony. And boy, if there’s one thing those ghouls in the unelected government in DC love, it’s bullying other countries and telling them what to do. If they couldn’t do that, life wouldn’t be worth living.
