I’ve been doing this since march 2022. I work two jobs full time, fully remote. Both are ‘Senior Software Engineer’ Job A pays 145k (recently got a raise from 132k), Job B pays 140k.
I was originally going to quit Job A, mostly due to the company being bought out and the culture and tech changing entirely, but I realized I was only doing a few hours of work a week and no one complained. So I decided to see how long I could go doing both. Job B is my more ‘real’ job where I put it the majority of my time. Rest of my time is spent in meetings and messing around.
Its a good gig to be in. I try to have the mindset that this could end at any time, so I try to just enjoy it while I can. I’m putting a majority of the income on my mortgage, 401ks, and savings. If I manage to keep it for 3 more years, I can pay off my mortgage and my wife can retire completely, around age 32.
Yeah, capitalism is really dumb. I don’t really want the responsibility of two jobs, but for the extra paycheck its worth it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
I acknowledge how extremely lucky I am, given not only the crazy salaries they pay in this field and the fact I originally went to college for something else and kinda fell into this career.
Edit: I should also mention that i’m pretty much near the end of my career… I started 10 years ago at 42k -> 55k -> 75k -> 110k -> 120k -> now
God I can’t think about retirement. I did the math a few times and it fucked me up with how early it’s feasible. It feels thoroughly unearned compared to the moderate difficulty & anxiety spike :foucault-madness:

i swear, there is a real phenomenon where sometimes i reach terminal stage of don’t-give-a-fuck at a job, and then everybody backs off. where i am at, a decent raise is balked at, but its more acceptable to refuse work. the ways management is internalizing the tightness of the labor market are strange. critical people keep leaving, even the ones management threw big money at to hire recently. the bosses are too ideologically blind to see that they could stabilize the situation by using those salary savings to give the rest of us peasants significant raises and instead will blow it on another “rockstar” that will probably leverage it into an even higher paying position elsewhere.
it must be difficult to be an employer and be ideologically blinded to understanding why people work. sure, the pay is good, but lately it must be very confusing.
