This gives me a good idea. In a Socialist society Janitors should have a holiday that lasts a week where they don’t go to work, just so everyone else realizes how necessary that work really is.

Agree with this. It’s not hard and it’s a good collective thing. It’s also pretty solid ego reduction because it stops people getting attitudes like thinking these kinds of tasks are beneath them.

Kids should be made to clean up after themselves, it’s a lifetime skill. Taking all the toys back to the toy box after playtime or ensuring all the basketballs get collected after recess is a form of habit inducing education that I think is important

That said janitor duties also extend to stuff i would not trust kids to do, like fixing broken pipes or climbing onto the roof after one of our dumbasses kicked a ball up there lol

Cleaning up after yourself isnt child labor and is good and cool to teach.

For schools I think it’s particularly useful, to teach kids both how to clean and the value of keeping things clean for everyone. In workplaces though there is at least a bit to be said for specialization of labor making that less ideal. The janitors can do a better job in half the time than me and my lab mates can, and also adding a few hours a week to our schedules for cleaning would be difficult.

Worked in a place that made vinyl and aluminum signs and fences. Everyday we had to clean up piles and piles of shavings from the saws and routers it 5 to 7 people about an hour. Granted we weren’t scrubbing toilets but it was something

Some asshole at my work spilled nearly a whole pot of coffee in the break room and left it there. Got on the counters, the floor, into the drawers with the coffee grounds/utensils/etc. People were curious and the attitude was definitely “man someone is a bumbling fool” but if there weren’t janitors to clean it and we say, drew lots to decide who had to clean it up there probably would have been a witch hunt instead, which would encourage the person who did it to just clean their own mess.

Which is just a long winded way of saying that I agree, office workers need to be forced to clean up after themselves.

this also kills the dipshit idea that the middle class are somehow “above” cleaning up after themselves

also anyone able-bodied who has a maid or cleaner for their own private home needs to be hanged by the neck until dead

People often think of the problem arising from garbage piling up. That will be a thing, but that first wave of people just not cleaning shit up cause fuck you would be grocery stores and every other link on the food supply chain. Keeping that shit disease free takes some degree of vigilance in every stage. The people who do the cleaning up are just like…actually the most powerful if they could be as heartless as their employers.

intentional dysfunction seems like a bad idea

I think that’s a great idea for a capitalist society though.

intentional dysfunction

nonsense. we don’t need a 24/7/365 rat race.

not what i said

reducing or stopping work because we object to work makes sense. creating an economy that relies on constant work, and then intentionally inducing dysfunction for dysfunction’s sake is absurd. it’s a thing workers are pushed to do under capitalists economies because we want to destroy capitalism.

Without distributing what can’t be automated in unsavory jobs like janitors, care work and ditch diggers (labor in genera tbh) equitably I don’t see a how you don’t perpetuate class relations.
