Now. Brits might have made a terrible mistake, but they aren’t fools. They are beginning to realize, to their horror, that Brexit has been a calamity of historic proportions. That’s not because anyone’s telling them the straight facts above, because they’ve got some kind of theoretical knowledge about it, but more simply, because they’re living it. Hence, in the latest polls, 2/3s of Brits want another referendum, on rejoining the EU again.
That’s because they are beginning to see what “Brexit is already 2/3 of the way to the Great Depression” or “Brexit turned Britain into Argentina” really means.
Consequences aren’t real until it starts hitting me in the face.
Because the country will get locked in a battle over the EU for years and years until Scotland finally breaks away and the remaining country leaves again, damaging itself even more.
The pro-EU crowd is also entirely driven by liberals while none of the hard socialist left supports or wants to be in the EU. This means it will elevate liberals vs reactionaries to prominence while socialists sit out because we don’t support anything the reactionaries have to say(because their idea of being out of the EU is different to ours) and also don’t support anything the liberals have to say. It will relegate socialists to the fringe. Either you’re in and rabidly pro-EU or you’re out and rabidly anti-EU and that is what British lines will be drawn along for 5-20 fucking years.
I will leave the fucking country and focus on somewhere else. I don’t want to do it again, I’m burned out after years and years of it the first fucking time.
This strange split was actually taken advantage of directly by Boris during his complete buffoonery in the late summer and fall of 2019. See here.
Yeah except the title of that article and some parts are completely incorrect. But the general gist being that well educated socialists don’t like either side and end up sitting out entirely, and it creates an entire political arena where there is literally no space for socialists.
It’s liberals vs conservatives on an issue of nationalism and anti-socialist institutions.
The whole thing was so fucking tiring and I am entirely unwilling to smash my head against the wall with it again. I’ll head to Scotland or Canada to fight a different battle instead. It would be a complete and total waste of my time. I see nothing that socialists can gain from it, not one single thing. The British left would die in that battle.
