Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins
Defense Politics Asia’s youtube channel and their map. I recommend their map more than the channel at this point, as an increasing subscriber count has greatly diminished their quality.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)
Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources. Beware of chuddery.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are fairly brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. The Duran, of which he co-hosts, is where the chuddery really begins to spill out.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.
Telegram Channels
Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR’s former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR’s forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ Gleb Bazov, banned from Twitter, referenced pretty heavily in what remains of pro-Russian Twitter.
https://t.me/asbmil ~ Now rebranded as Battlefield Insights, they do infrequent posts on the conflict.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday Patrick Lancaster’s telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ Front news coverage. Russian langauge.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of the really big pro-Russian (except when they’re being pessismistic, which is often) telegram channels focussing on the war. Russian language.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a ‘propaganda tax’, if you don’t believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.
Pro-Ukraine
Any Western media outlet that is even vaguely liberal (and quite a few conservative ones too).

Last week’s discussion post.
I commented this elsewhere
Interestingly, that is Denys Monastyrskyi who, as interior minister, is responsible for law enforcement and anti-corruption.
He was conducting a “criminal investigation” into that bomb that some elements in Ukraine sent to Poland’s police HQ in Warsaw. He was clear that he saw this as a criminal investigation and that they were seeking to find the perpetrators who are exceedingly likely to be some faction of Ukrainian military / police / SBU.
Monastyrskyi is very close to Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy put Monastyrskyi in the job replacing the previous interior minister who held the role for four years. This was a major part of Zelenskyy’s anti-corruption drive. Whoever is in the interior minister position has the power to investigate official corruption, and to choose not to investigate as well.
So we have Zelenskyy’s guy, who was in the job to target oligarch corruption in Ukraine [read: to investigate the corruption by the political enemies of Zelenskyy and to shut down investigations into Zelenskyy’s allies], who was investigating a bomb that some Ukrainian fascists (probably) sent to kill the Polish police chief.
Oh and this helicopter was observed to be flying “just fine” in the seconds before the “crash”. They are claiming the “crash” is due to “pilot error”. Somehow in the space of several seconds, the pilot changed from flying controlled circuits above the treeline and then suddenly just fell out of the sky. You can see in the video it was flying low, but was still tens or dozens of meters above any actual hazards. It is not very likely that it just randomly hit something, it was flying low but not that low at all.
And when it hit the ground the entire thing became a burning wreckage.
Gerashchenko is calling it sabotage as well, he is probably implying Russian saboteurs but that’s just completely implausible for a helicopter over Kyiv. I agree with Gerashchenko that this is exceedingly likely to be sabotage but these saboteurs were very likely Ukrainian fascists.
I’m calling it. This was an assassination. We are seeing the beginnings of in-fighting between the fascist elements and the Zelenskyy elements.
Political assassinations are beginning.

Let’s just go with the hypothesis they hit a tree or a powerline, an unusually tall one let’s say, why does it burst into flames? Wouldn’t that just be a crash? At that height you’d expect most of them had a decent chance of survival if they basically fell out of the sky. This is looks like a bomb to me as it doesn’t make sense (imo) for such an inferno to be the result of hitting a tree and then crashing about 30-50 meters down to earth.
Accident, coup, or purge? Need a professor of Ukrainology to explain this to me. German media pushing the accident angle makes me think they’re not too worried about this. Could just be that they know fuckall and the fact that the helicopter has a history of being shit is the only thing they can write about. At least they’re not blaming it on Russia just yet.
evidence for accident: riding a helicopter at night in a blacked out city during fog
evidence for not an accident: “what if there were sinister purposes at work”
Good point. The German article I read mention nothing about fog, flying low or anything of the circumstances. It does have 1/3 of the article about how that type of helicopter has a habit crashing though, which makes it sound more like a freak accident, i.e. not that likely.
Russian media in the meantime is running with “Ukrainian air defense shot down their own helicopter”
