Finally picked up Grapes of Wrath, and damn is it good. Steinbeck has such beautiful prose when he’s not writing southern dialect.
What other classics are still compelling today? If it’s any help, I don’t really dig Vonnegut, Asimov, and Huxley.

View all comments I’ll recommend La Bête humaine by Émile Zola. It’s surprisingly like a modern crime novel, complete with murderous, deranged protagonists and criminal intrigue. Also, the pacing is well done, which is usually my biggest problem with older prose. And it’s about trains, which is always a plus.
