The United States more or less colonized Rojava, but years ago faced regional control setbacks regarding Rojava/Kurdish leaders deciding to abandon independence in favor of Syrian gov support and the avoidance of continued conflict with Turkey (a peace which the United States was not going to negotiate or maintain for reasons).
