It isn’t about cost efficiency, it’s about space.

I mean, space costs money. Some brain genius simply decided that whatever the fuck this is would be more “cost efficient” than a tree by overvaluing the property its attached to.

we need more space because most societies are car dependent.

Yeah, talk about maximizing that efficiency of land use. Yesh.

It isn’t even that. If you’re just taking about revenue / sqft, Japan’s underground rail and vertical construction is vastly more profitable than Houston’s concrete sprawl.

Car culture is simply about outsourcing costs. Individual margins are goosed at the expense of national income.
