https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/13/business/stressed-disengaged-workers-gallup-poll/index.html
Survey results revealed that 59% of workers are “quiet quitting,” i.e. are not engaged; and 18% are “loud quitting,” which is the act of being actively disengaged
how can I tell if I am “not engaged” vs. “actively disengaged”?
Now I understand why school in America sucks. They want work to be just like school in the sense where you are encouraged to work extra for “good grades” but those “grades” in the adult world are just bragging rights, that ultimately mean nothing because if you try to use them to switch jobs, your employers will talk shit about you to prevent you from getting that job.
aside from additional hours etc, some jobs have some implied components like external reputation management (being friendly to stakeholders, outside partners, just generally helpful to clients you have nothing to do with, etc), initiative taking (see a problem, try to fix the problem), creativity, collaboration and sharing of institutional knowledge. somebody who is checked out doesn’t do any of that shit. if enough people at an organization check out like that, it’s crippling to the organization in the long term. it is always, 100% a crisis of leadership and it is very difficult to fix, even with more money alone. you can’t just untraumatize people that have been repeatedly abused.
