aside from additional hours etc, some jobs have some implied components like external reputation management (being friendly to stakeholders, outside partners, just generally helpful to clients you have nothing to do with, etc), initiative taking (see a problem, try to fix the problem), creativity, collaboration and sharing of institutional knowledge. somebody who is checked out doesn’t do any of that shit. if enough people at an organization check out like that, it’s crippling to the organization in the long term. it is always, 100% a crisis of leadership and it is very difficult to fix, even with more money alone. you can’t just untraumatize people that have been repeatedly abused.
