Free school meals are such a small (from a financial and tax perspective) and feel-good issue that even libs support it. You have to be crazy to be against this, it is not like it costs a lot or there is some big demographic just clamoring for school meals to not be free.

It’s not so much about the actual financials, it’s more about crushing people’s spirits, teaching them there’s no magic meal tree or whatever

It’s not necessarily about government. It is about indoctrination into the ideology of private property. Free lunches represent a contradiction in that ideology and therefore cannot be tolerated lest they allow people to question private property as an institution.

it’s the belief that getting something for nothing breaks something in you and that pain is an instructor that makes you better.

To the mind of a conservative like Thatcher she was helping the children become more moral by making them poorer and their lives worse
