hi, I was curious about good alternatives to gmail for running email. I recall reading something about protonmail not being very private? Just wondering if there are any good solutions that don’t involve running your own email server.

You can get a Yandex account and email. They probably will still hand over data to your govt if requested but the data is all stored in either Europe or Russia. Of course it’s not “private” but email isn’t really private as a protocol and can’t be. You can use PGP with people you communicate with regularly, but the recipient address obviously needs to be known to the servers. But good call on not running your own server because that requires work and would probably end up being less secure since it’s one person running it. There might be some managed cloud email servers though, that would be a middle ground in terms of privacy.
