Both presidential candidates in the most recent election were right wingers, There is only one purely leftist party with 8 out of 130 seats, and the other 2 having right social policies an even then only have 15 and 13 seats. Why is this?

I think they are still recovering from the civil war and shining path insurgency. Basically leftist groups other than the shining path were caught between the reactionary counter insurgency and the violent sectarianism of the shining path. Much of the left was destroyed or discredited as a result. Bad empanada has a good video about this though it is quite long
