I mean it wouldn’t get them bombed. They would just become a US satellite state, like the Pacific territories that seceded peacefully. But there are significant material benefits to becoming a state, like welfare and better aid in the case of another hurricane. Seceding would also possibly cost them the right to immigrate to the US.

Wasn’t the US response to the last hurricane famously inept? I mean, I get it. It might seem like a materially better choice to people there than going it alone, that’s just another expression of colonisation though, being dependant on the oppressor nation. It’s part of the system of control.

It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out. The dems could certainly use another two senate seats (which they’ve always assumed they’d get if this happened).
