People were mad because 9/11 is the sort of thing that happens in places that you can’t pronounce and have never heard of, not the Capital of the Universe.

Covid is similar. Plagues happen in weird dirty countries, not here. Why should good, decent Americans not be allowed to go shopping and grab a bite at that fun sit down place next to the mall, with the good sandwiches? Mass death can’t happen here, people just need to shape up (/s)!

Yeah it’s like Americans operate under this notion of a just world fallacy maybe more than anyone else (largely because we are so much better off materially than much of the world so we get to feel like we’re the good people), and we don’t like it when that get shattered. Everyone gets what they deserve so bad things can’t happen to us because we are the good people.
