I tried bringing up Bullshit Jobs and he deflected it like an egg on teflon.
He literally brought up industrialization and I was very close to saying the phrase “Engels wrote about alienation in the work place 140 years ago!”
I tried explaining that alienation and demoralization of a bullshit service job to survive is worse than the lack of “dignity” of getting a check. He kept repeating that people will be paid for “sitting on the couch eating doritos”. I think it was projection because he is a very large man who also might enjoy that lifestyle.
I tried explaining that most people would rather be doing something else, using the example I rather be woodworking, reading, and playing music rather than working but he totally ignored that fact for the couch aspect.
I bet they’ll come around. I probably passed through this thought process when I was feeling things out but before I read Marx.
