Admittedly even though I’ve been listening to chapo since 2018-ish I only became “officially part of the community”, as in i started following the podcast every week and joined the subreddit, a few months ago when i became very politically invested upon seeing how bad the government dealt with the pandemic. as a result i’m not too familiarized with a lot of the inside jokes one of them being this collective annoyance at Amber. I’ve heard some rumours about her criticizing the subreddit and telling us all to “get a life” or something along those lines, but apart from that I don’t really know much about her outside of the chapo realm. Care to elucidate me?

use an @ to get a pop-up with users. the devs already know, they just have their hands very full right now trying to build up moderation tools to deal with spam.

Why is everything broken here? Why have the @ system if it doesn’t even ping users, I’ve used it several times now ;___;

I knoooow!! It’s handy in that it gives you the user’s actual correct name, and highlights it so they’re easier to see; that’s how I found this. But it sucks in that it feels like you’re pinging but you’re not; I had that same experience when I found out.

Why is everything broken here?

Because it’s a brand new site that was slapped together by devs literally working around the clock to create a home for a homeless community. For example, I just spent the last two hours collecting a list of like 10 features that need to be fixed/built next, and I’m not even a dev haha. The devs work work work work all night and day, and they’re making a lot of great progress imo. We also… have had to spend some time focusing on certain pressing issues which weren’t exactly the ones we wanted to focus on. It is what it is! :)

I cannot deal with this, I just typed out a huge reply to you in my inbox, and then autoupdate populated a new reply I got and erased the entire comment by closing the text box.

This is seriously horrible.

I was saying, I think so much of this would be fixed by turning auto sort off, it bumps you to the top or bottom of the page, autosorts comments around making anyone lose track of a thread, deletes comments being typed when it autosorts, doesn’t actually implement the sort you select on a thread and somehow glitches between them, etc.

It just did it again as I typed this on the main thread. I’ve started stopping every typed sentence to Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C so I don’t lose my whole comment. I want to cry

Yep, that autoupdate stuff is priority number 1. Honestly, I type a lot of overly-long shit on here, and I’ve taken to just typing it all up in a text editor and copying and pasting it in when I’m done.

Or, ya, doing the old Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C autosave hahaha. If it’s really getting to you, you could always take a break? The update should be pretty soon, afaik. I know the deep, existential anguish of having that perfect 20,000 character response all typed-up and formatted, with perfect emoji placement, and then someone comments a cringe one-liner somewhere on the post and you lose it all hahaha

Basically, just know that the devs are acutely aware of all this and are actively working on it, especially the auto-sort stuff. There’s also !feedback if you feel like there’s an issue you’d like to report, or if you’d like to read through some of the convos that have already happened around these issues. :af-heart:

Yeah that’s what I’m saying, I’d love to make this site the timesink CTH was on Reddit, but for the past week I come for 10 minutes and it drives me away.

I also do not understand how inbox marking read replies works, unread messages seem to just stick around no matter what

They still haven’t fixed “secre*ary” and that was two weeks ago

@Beatnik Like, come on. Pull up a list of how many times the censor list has worked correctly and then turn it off.

It’s worked for real a few times. Always up for discussion tho, afaik, and being changed to be better etc.

I have never seen it correctly remove a slur on here, only ever triggering on someone trying to use a word properly in inoffensive context or completely wrongly in non offensive words like secremovedy or bastard.

I’ve seen it correctly remove slurs. Often the comment gets removed anyway if it’s an offending one; the filter just means that slur isn’t sitting around for a few minutes/hours/days before mods get to it. Esp. some of the smaller comms, moderation can be a little slow for now! It’s a system in flux tho, its wordlist is soon to be updated, and we might move away from it altogether. We’ll see.

In my personal opinion, the inconvenience of having to dance around a slur filter is more than worth it for the odd time it’s useful.

Oh also clicking the direct link on a comment DOES NOT take you to the comment, especially on a big thread with all the comments not loaded, like this.

It just loads the whole thread and tries to scroll the page to it, which is a bad way to do it because it involves every other sorting issue

On slurs, I just saw it confuse a whole thread trying to talk about “sl*t-shaming” and people arguing back and forth about not knowing what “removed-shaming” is. This is not a good system.

Also a known thing. I find there’s two cases in which it happens:

It takes you to just slightly below the comment, and the topbar/navbar covers it. The topbar was added after the comment link function. In this case, just scroll up a wee bit
The comment it far enough down the page that it doesn’t load in with the first set of comments that load when you load a page. Then it just leaves you at the very top of the post. In this case, I tend to scroll alllll the way down, until all the comments have loaded, and then looking for the linked comment (it’s usually grey)

As for the filter and the word sl*t, that’s pretty much the main change being made to the word list, seeing as it’s mostly a reclaimed slur.

The slur filter is still super important tho. You probably haven’t seen the chud shit that’s shown up here already, and we’re such a small site, but it definitely exists. Maybe the devs will get rid of the slur filter altogether someday, but as someone who doesn’t have many dimensions to my identity with slurs custom-made for, I don’t feel like it’s hugely my place to decide that. But there is a broader convo happening for sure. There’s prolly posts in !feedback about that one.
