MMT stands for Modern Monetary Theory. The big takeaway is that countries like the United States – countries which issue their own fiat currency, pay obligations in that currency, and have robust productive capacities – can do a whole lot more deficit spending before it becomes an issue. This doesn’t mean that we can print unlimited money and solve big problems with it, but it does mean that we can print far more money than we currently do without risking consequences like runaway inflation. It’s a direct answer to “but how are you gonna pay for it?” deficit scolds.
