The moons appearence change is cyclical regardless of whether or not elephants keep track. That is pretty certain here. Whats interesting is the same specific behavior to these cyclical changes.

I’d be more inclined to agree with you if there were more intervals of study where the appearance of the moon isnt significantly affected, but in this case it is, so i think it makes more sense to say they are responding to visual stimuli as opposed to religious beliefs.
