…War? With a nuclear state? Limited engagement, maybe. But I don’t think anyone would seriously propose war.
War doesn’t need to be bloodlust to the death. Limited engagement can occur without nukes. It just has a lot of risk of escalating to nukes.
Even with nukes, there’s no certainty that it’ll go full MAD. You can have limited engagement with tactical nukes.
Ideally for the hawks, they’d force China into making a stab for Taiwan, successfully repel it, demolish the SCS islands, and close the Strait of Malacca to starve China of oil. They’d hope that the double up of the failure of retaking Taiwan, and the economic pain from the blockade, would be enough to force some sort of regime change.
